All you’re hearing is words that have no meaning to you. A fight between Ellen and her husband is meant to play like a powerful turning point, where decades’ worth of accumulated resentment is let out, but because the emotions involved are never developed, it’s like watching a fight between two strangers on a bus. Scenes go on aimlessly for far too long to little dramatic reward. Moments in the script - a first kiss or flowering of guilt - occur so abruptly, it’s as if emotional context was never considered. The problem is depth requires digging, and How He Fell in Love never digs beyond the surface.įor all of the skin we see of Travis (Matt McGorry), a 30-something struggling musician, and Ellen (Amy Hargreaves), a married 44-year-old yoga club owner, the characters are barely fleshed out (late in the film, Ellen’s husband tells Travis, “You don’t know what makes her tick,” and it’s hard not to think, “Neither do we”). But instead, it misguidedly seeks depth in what it’s got.
